Web design · Mauritius & international

Website design in Mauritius is usually sold as a look. We treat it as a working asset: a site planned around what your visitors came to do, written before it is drawn, and built by Lean Tech on a modern stack that stays fast on a phone in Curepipe and a laptop in London.

01 · Decide the job

Showcase, lead generation or eCommerce?

Before a colour is chosen, decide what the website is for. Every good design decision downstream (layout, copy length, photography, what sits above the fold) follows from this one answer. Most sites are one of three shapes.

Showcase

The brand is the product.

Hotels, villas, architects, restaurants, premium brands. Visitors come to feel something and to be reassured. Photography gets room, copy stays short, motion is considered, and the site must still load in a blink on a phone.

Desired action · enquire, book, visit

Lead generation

Built around one number.

Services, B2B, professional firms, clinics, schools. The site exists to turn a search into a qualified enquiry. Landing pages are shaped by search intent, forms are short and honest, and every lead lands in your CRM with its source attached.

Desired action · call, WhatsApp, request a quote

eCommerce

The site is the store.

Retail, pharmacies, food and drink, bookings. Product data, search, stock, delivery rules and payments (MIPS for Mauritian cards, Stripe or PayPal for the world, or the gateway you already use) have to be right, because here friction is lost revenue. Trust signals matter as much as the design.

Desired action · add to cart, check out, reorder

Some sites become a fourth thing: a platform with portals, dashboards and automations. All four shapes are described on our capabilities page.

Still deciding? Tell us what the site must achieve and we will recommend the shape, with a frank read on scope and cost, within a working day.

02 · The desired action

What should a visitor do next?

A page without a clear next step is a brochure. For every page, name one primary action and, at most, one secondary. Then design the page so that the primary action is obvious at the top, repeated at the natural pauses, and easy to complete on a phone with one thumb.

  • Call or WhatsApp

For services people want now: a tap to call button that works, a WhatsApp link with a prefilled message, and tracking on both.

  • Enquire or request a quote

A short form that asks only what you need to reply well, confirms instantly, and delivers the lead where your team works.

  • Book or reserve

Live availability, a calendar that understands Mauritian public holidays, a deposit if it helps, and a confirmation people trust.

  • Buy

Search, filters, clear prices in rupees, delivery costs shown early, guest checkout, and MIPS beside Stripe or PayPal so local and international cards both work first time.

  • Download or subscribe

A brochure, price list or newsletter in exchange for an email: a softer first step for visitors who are not ready to talk.

  • Visit

Opening hours, a map that opens in the visitor's own app, parking notes, and a photo of the entrance so nobody drives past.

Whatever the action, measure it. Server side tracking tells you which page, campaign and search term produced each enquiry, so the design improves on evidence rather than opinion. Not sure what your visitors should do first? Ask.

03 · Prepare the content

Content before pixels. Always.

The most common reason a website project drags on is that it was designed around placeholder text. Prepare the content first and the design becomes a series of easy decisions. It is how we work: Lean Search's content and SEO team researches and writes, Lean Tech designs and builds, at the same table (the “one roof” model on our homepage).

01 · Search demand

Map what people type.

In Mauritius and in the markets you export to, in English and in French. Each cluster of intent becomes a page: your sitemap, drawn from evidence.

02 · Page briefs

One line per page.

Who lands here, what they need to believe, the single action you want. It keeps writer, designer and developer aiming at the same target.

03 · Copy first

Write before you draw.

Headline, supporting line, proof, action. In the customer's language, short where people scan, complete where they decide.

04 · Proof

Collect the evidence.

Client logos, named testimonials, numbers you can stand behind, certifications, press. Proof turns a nice design into a persuasive one.

05 · Photography

Shoot the real thing.

Your team, premises, products and island. Stock imagery is the fastest way to look like everyone else. Shoot for the layouts, in both orientations.

06 · Practical pages

The unglamorous pages.

Privacy, terms, delivery and returns, opening hours, directions, the BRN in the footer. The first things a careful buyer checks.

04 · Find inspiration

Inspiration is research, not browsing.

The goal of a moodboard is not to find a site to copy. It is to agree on five principles (type, colour, space, image, motion) before anyone argues about a homepage. Here is what ours looks like.

AwwwardsSiteinspireLand-bookGodlyDribbbleBehanceMobbinFonts In UseAre.naPinterestMinimal GalleryLapa Ninja
01 · Type scale

One family, three weights, a fluid scale from 16px body to a 100px display. Big where it matters, quiet everywhere else.

02 · Colour roles

Each colour has a job: one to act, one to accent, one to ground, one to rest. Never decoration.

03 · Image treatment

Real photography, full bleed, given room. The rule is written once and every page inherits it.

04 · Spacing rhythm

4 · 8 · 12 · 16 · 24 · 32 · 48 · 64 · 80 · 120. One scale, so layouts feel calm without anyone measuring.

05 · Motion

One easing curve, three durations. Fast to respond, slow to settle, and switched off for anyone who asks.

The output
  1. Type scale
  2. Colour roles
  3. Image treatment
  4. Spacing rhythm
  5. Motion

Five rules, written down, become the design system. The design system makes every future page consistent without a meeting.

  • Look where designers look

Awwwards, Siteinspire and Land-book for whole sites; Dribbble and Behance for concepts; Mobbin for real checkout flows. Save whole pages, and note why each one works.

  • Borrow from the best, not the nearest

A villa rental should study the best hotel and fashion sites in the world, not the villa down the road. Adjacent industries carry the freshest ideas.

  • Start with what you own

Your logo, print, signage, uniforms, building. A site that feels like the real place converts better than one that feels like a template.

  • Copy the thinking, never the site

From the moodboard, extract principles, not pages. That is the difference between inspired and derivative.

Design for the Mauritian reality.

  • Two languages

English and French, planned from the start, with room for the German or Italian a resort may need. Never a machine translation bolted on later.

  • Phone first

Most local traffic is on a mid range Android over mobile data. Design at 360px wide, then scale up, and keep every page under budget.

  • Two audiences

A local buyer and an international one in the same session. Prices, phone numbers, delivery and time zones handled without confusion.

  • Local channels

WhatsApp as a front door, MIPS beside the international gateways, and a Google Business Profile that matches the site.

05 · How we design a website

Research. Structure. Concept. System. Build.

The ideal way to design a website is the boring way: in order, with each step signed off before the next begins. It is faster than it looks, because nothing gets designed twice.

  • Step 1

    Discovery

Your goals, your customers, your competitors, your search demand. The brief that everything else answers to.

  • Step 2

    Structure

Sitemap and wireframes: what goes on each page, in what order, with the desired action placed on purpose.

  • Step 3

    Concept

Original design directions built around your brand and your real content, presented and refined with you.

  • Step 4

    Design system

The chosen concept becomes a system of colours, type and components. Every page inherits it. Consistency is automatic.

  • Step 5

    Build

Coded in React, Next.js and Payload CMS, secured, hosted properly, and shielded by Cloudflare. See the technology.

  • Step 6

    Launch & measure

Redirects, analytics, search console, then monthly reads of what converts. The design keeps improving after launch.

Want a frank read on scope, stack and cost before you commit to anything? Send the brief. The two people who would build it reply.

Selected work

Four sites, four different jobs.

Each of these was designed around a different desired action. Notice how the shape of the homepage follows the job.

  • eCommerce

    Vitalpharma

An importer of food supplements selling direct to Mauritian households. The store leads with search, a category bar and the current offer, because a returning customer already knows what they want. Account, cart and stock are wired into the back office.

Desired action · Add to cart, check out

    Visit vitalpharma.mu
  • Showcase

    Mauritius Sotheby’s International Realty

Luxury real estate where the property is the message. A full screen film, one line of copy and three doors: Buy, Rent, Sell with us. Trilingual (EN, FR, DE) for an international buyer, restrained everywhere else so the homes do the talking.

Desired action · Enquire on a property, list a property

    Visit sir.mu
  • Lead generation

    Lean Search

Our sister company’s own site, built around one number: strategy calls booked. A headline that states the promise, a proof strip, the industries served, and the same button repeated at every point a visitor is ready.

Desired action · Book a strategy call

    Visit leansearch.com
  • Community platform

    Jummah Masjid, Port Louis

A mosque founded in 1852 with a daily job to do. The site computes prayer times for Port Louis and counts down to the next namaz, in French and English, on a heritage design that respects the building. A website that serves, not just describes.

Desired action · Check today’s prayer times

Questions we are asked

Website design in Mauritius, answered.

Do you design websites in both English and French?

Yes. Most Mauritian audiences read both, and many international visitors read one. We plan the language structure at the sitemap stage so that every page has a proper counterpart, and the search engines see two clean sites rather than one muddled one.

Do we need to write the content ourselves?

No. Lean Tech builds alongside Lean Search’s content and SEO teams. They research what your customers actually search for, then write the copy to win it, before the design begins. You review and approve; you do not start from a blank page.

Will our team be able to edit the website after launch?

Yes. Every build ships with Payload CMS, a clean admin panel where your staff change copy, photos, products and pages without raising a ticket. The layout and design system stay protected, so edits never break the look.

Can an eCommerce website take payments in Mauritius?

Yes. MIPS is our preferred Mauritian gateway for local cards and mobile payments; alongside it we integrate Stripe, PayPal, or the gateway you already have a contract with. Everything runs with 3D Secure and card data never touches your servers. Stock, orders and delivery rules can be wired into the systems you already run.

We already have a designer. Can you build from their designs?

Yes. Send us the Figma, XD or Sketch files and we engineer them, pixel for pixel, into a fast, secure Next.js and Payload CMS build. Your designer keeps creative ownership; we own the code, the hosting and the performance.

What makes website design in Mauritius different from anywhere else?

Two audiences at once. A local visitor is very often on a mid range Android phone over mobile data and expects WhatsApp as a contact channel; an international visitor arrives from Google in London, Paris or Johannesburg and judges you against the best sites in their market. The design has to satisfy both: light, fast and bilingual, yet polished enough to travel.

Design, your way

Three ways to work with us.

Some clients want the whole thing handled. Some have a strong vision and want creative direction to shape it. Some already have a designer and need engineers. All three end in the same build quality.

In house

We take care of the design.

Lean Tech's own designers concept the site, build the design system and code it, with Lean Search writing the content. One team, one roof, one point of contact.

  • Concepts presented and refined with you
  • Content, SEO, design and code together
  • The fastest route from brief to launch
Creative art direction

Your vision, art directed.

Our digital creative art directors take your vision and brief and shape the website design and brand around it: creative territories, art direction for photography and motion, identity refinements, then our build.

  • For brands with a strong point of view
  • Design and brand developed together
  • Art direction that carries into campaigns
Development only

You have a designer. We build.

You have a design agency or a designer you trust. Send us the Figma, XD or Sketch files and we engineer them, pixel for pixel, into a fast, secure Next.js and Payload CMS build that your team can edit.

  • Your designer keeps creative ownership
  • We own performance, security and hosting
  • Design reviews to catch what will not build
